Cairo International Film Festival Announces Special Tribute to Film Distribution Pioneer Antoine Zeind at Its 47th Edition

Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) has announced a special tribute to veteran film distributor Antoine Zeind, one of the leading pioneers of film distribution in Egypt and the Arab world, at its 47th edition, taking place from 11 to 20 November 2026, as the festival marks 50 years since its inaugural edition in 1976. The tribute recognises his professional career spanning more than six decades, his pioneering contributions to developing film distribution and exhibition, his role in strengthening the presence of international cinema in Egyptian theatres, and his achievements in building longstanding professional relationships between the Egyptian film industry and major international production and distribution companies.
The announcement was made during the festival’s press conference, held today, 11 October, at Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile.
Antoine Zeind is one of the most prominent figures in the history of film distribution in Egypt, with a professional career that has witnessed the industry’s major transformations over more than six decades. He began his journey in cinema in 1960, working with United Artists, and gradually gained experience across various aspects of film distribution, including theatrical exhibition, film marketing, and distribution management. This early experience laid the foundation for a career that contributed to developing the ways international films reached Egyptian audiences and strengthening connections between the local market and the global film industry.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Zeind held prominent positions at several major international film companies. Between 1976 and 1979, he served as Marketing Manager for Merchandising and Publications at Walt Disney, before becoming General Manager of Twentieth Century Fox in Egypt in 1980. These experiences established his reputation as one of the leading specialists in film distribution, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the Egyptian market and its audiences, his ability to manage relationships with international companies, and his understanding of the economic and technological changes affecting the film industry.
In 1987, he founded United Motion Pictures (UMP), which became one of Egypt’s leading distributors of international films, bringing major productions to local cinemas and attracting wide audiences over several decades. The company handled the theatrical distribution of Twentieth Century Fox films before expanding its international partnerships to become Warner Bros.’ theatrical distribution representative in Egypt in 1992. It also distributed productions from other major international companies, including Columbia Pictures and Walt Disney, alongside films from independent production companies.
Zeind’s contributions also extended to expanding the distribution of independent films. From the beginning of the new millennium, his company strengthened its partnerships with international companies, including Lionsgate, Summit, and Constantin Film, bringing greater diversity to the international films available to Egyptian audiences. He also contributed to developing the theatrical exhibition sector through investments in cinemas and modern multiplexes in Cairo and Alexandria, reflecting an approach that combines film distribution with the development of the industry’s commercial infrastructure and broadens its reach to wider audiences.
Antoine Zeind has maintained a longstanding professional relationship with Cairo International Film Festival, collaborating to bring major international films to its screens. One notable example came in 2017, when he worked with the festival’s management and Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad to coordinate with Twentieth Century Fox on postponing the commercial release in Egypt of The Mountain Between Us, starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. This arrangement enabled the film to be selected as the opening film of the festival’s 39th edition. The experience highlights the important role film distributors play in connecting festivals with international production companies and facilitating the presentation of distinguished cinematic works.
Zeind’s career has received considerable professional recognition. In 2009, United Motion Pictures received the Best Licensee Award from Twentieth Century Fox in recognition of its outstanding performance and longstanding partnership with the international studio. Zeind was also honoured at the Faten Hamama International Film Festival in Paris in 2022 and at the 50th edition of the Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema in 2024, in recognition of his contributions to the film industry and his role in developing the distribution sector.
His professional journey was also documented in the 2017 documentary The Distributor, written and directed by Maggie Anwar, who co-produced the film with actor Hisham Selim. The documentary explores Antoine Zeind’s decades-long career in film distribution and the challenges faced by the industry at different stages, drawing on his personal testimony and professional memories. It offers an insight into an important chapter of Egyptian cinema history, tracing the transformation of the exhibition and distribution market and its relationship with broader social and economic changes.
Honouring Antoine Zeind celebrates one of the pioneers of the film industry who helped shape its relationship with audiences, develop the channels through which films reach cinemas, and build bridges of cooperation with international film institutions. It also reflects Cairo International Film Festival’s recognition of the creative talents and industry professionals whose contributions span the various stages of filmmaking, from production, cinematography, and directing to distribution and exhibition, and who have helped consolidate cinema’s cultural and economic significance and strengthen its presence in society.
Cairo International Film Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the Arab world and Africa. It is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) as an international competitive film festival. Established in 1976, the festival is held annually under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.
